Your desire to do the behaviour right now. Motivation fluctuates — which is why it is the least reliable driver of lasting change.

Ability

How easy the behaviour is to do. The simpler and smaller the habit, the less motivation it requires — and the more reliably it sticks.

Prompt

The cue that triggers the behaviour. Anchoring a new habit to an existing daily routine is the most reliable prompt available.

The habit recipe below uses an anchor (the AFTER) as your prompt, a deliberately tiny behaviour as your action (high ability = low motivation required), and a moment of acknowledgement as your celebration. Tiny, anchored, and celebrated — that is what makes habits stick.
